The Final Countdown

Posted by Daniel on August 31, 2006

It’s almost here. Forty eight hours from now, it will arrive. There is such a flurry of activity around this place as final preparations are made for our big “5th Anniversary/Daniel’s Birthday/Ray’s Birthday Party”.

You remember me talking before about Ray. He’s supposedly a “contributor” on this site, yet he never does. He (meaning his link) just hangs out here for the free advertisement. The cheap bastard. Happy birthday, Hua!!  😉

We’re trying to finish up most – if not all – projects in time for Saturday. Those that can’t be finished will have the yellow tape around. You know, to set the theme:

“Do not enter or touch for fear of death…canapé?”

Steve took the entire week off so he can work on getting the house ready for guests, cook and help me on finishing up some outside projects. He’s probably the best spouse in history. He’s certainly earned his ‘wings’ by putting up with me for the past five years. (shameless sucking up for that last-minute ‘surprise’ gift…hehe)

As for me, I have to work each day until 4:30, then come straight home and dive right into project finishing. I don’t have to tell you, I am one pooped puppy. Hell, even as I write this, my head SO wants to slam down on the keyboard from exhaustion. But I have to go to work. I’m confused..when I come home from work, am I actually going to work?

Anyway, forty eight hours…

Stupid Is As Stupid Does

Posted by Daniel on August 30, 2006

Just when I think people in traffic can’t get any dumber, out pops a new graduate of the school of stupidity.

Keep in mind two very important facts while reading this:
1) It only takes 7 minutes of driving between my driveway and my work parking lot.
2) I encounter at least 5 or 6 idiot drivers each way.

Yesterday I was on my way home from work and I am on a certain Parkway. This parkway is two lanes going northbound and two lanes going southbound. There is a median between the two. As I’m driving north, this hillbilly in a new white Lincoln Towncar (who is waiting at a cross street) decides he’s waited long enough to merge into traffic.

As there’s a lot of new construction in the area, you see a lot of cement mixer vehicles going to and from project sites.

The hillbilly in question has no intentions of waiting for the next cement truck and GUNS it across the parkway and nearly slams sidelong into my side of my truck. Had it not been for my cat-like driving prowess (?), not to mention my heavy hand on the horn, this reject from Deliverance would have seen my “purdy myouth” up close and personal.

I have a theory about this particular dude driving this particular vehicle:
Either he stole the car and he’s trying to make a fast getaway, or else the meth business is REALLY booming these days.

All of this happens within a few seconds, as is always the case.

So, after quickly recovering from this near death experience (can you say Drama Queen??), I am happily continuing on my merry way up the parkway. Just before I get to the light where I make my turn home, “Clem” races by me in his meth-mobile and FLIPS ME OFF!!!

“Oh, sorry. My Bad. I should have given you the right-of-way. How could I have been so insensitive? I’m sure you have a lot of “deliveries” to make and were just trying to fill your crack-whore quota.”

I’m sure this is yet another experience I should just chaulk up to “driving while smarter than everyoine else”. Clearly the drivers elsewhere are just as ferociously stupid as those here in Missouri. Maybe the stupid drivers near you even have mullets like they do here.

Well, I’ve gotta go. I’m on my way to work and the Parkway beckons. Maybe I’ll get cut off by one of those Caravans this time.

Note: I fucking HATE Caravans!!

Gay Marriage…Such a fuss!!

Posted by Daniel on August 29, 2006

Seriously, I don’t know what all the fuss about gay marriage is, but it seems to be coming up in political so-called debates again. (see here for the latest shot)

So here’s my reply…

(Note:  It’s 5:34 long, but worth the time.)

Katherine Harris Shoots From The Lip

Posted by Daniel on August 28, 2006

U.S. Rep. Katherine Harris – Florida 13- (R)

You know her…You love her. She’s the reason, according to some, that Al Gore still wakes up in a cold sweat.

Her putting a halt to the hand counding of ballots during the 2000 Presidential elections became infamous. Many on the left still hold her accountable as the sole reason George Bush ‘won’ that election. Those on the right, however, secretly praised her.

Since then, Harris has been in and out of the spotlight. She is currently the U.S. Representative representing Florida’s 13th District. And she’s had a lot to say. Again, Republicans like Sean Hannity and many others have praised her as the outspoken lady who never yeilds or winces at the barbs thrown at her by the Left. Republicans knew she would say anything to ruffle the liberal feathers. She and Ann Coulter could do no wrong in the eyes of the GOP and, without formally endorsing their rhetoric directly, the right wing sat back and just enjoyed the fireworks.

That is, until recently.

The bile pouring from Ann Coulter about 9/11 widows being shrieking harpies profiting from their husbands deaths really made the right sit up and slowly step away. Proof of their lapse in praise for Coulter was seen last week when she was dissed by a news commentator…on FOX’s “Hannity & Colmbs” no less. See the story and video here.

But this story is really about Katherine Harris and her latest bout of hoof-in-mouth.

In a recent interview, Harris was asked what role does she think people of faith should play n politics and government. Her answer was, to put it mildly, an unintended swift kick in the ass for the GOP.

“The Bible says we are to be salt and light. And salt and light means not just in the church and not just as a teacher or as a pastor or a banker or a lawyer, but in government and we have to have elected officials in government and we have to have the faithful in government and over time, that lie we have been told, the separation of church and state, people have internalized, thinking that they needed to avoid politics and that is so wrong because God is the one who chooses our rulers. And if we are the ones not actively involved in electing those godly men and women and if people aren’t involved in helping godly men in getting elected than we’re going to have a nation of secular laws. That’s not what our founding fathers intended and that’s certainly isn’t what God intended. So it’s really important that members of the church know people’s stands. It’s really important that they get involved in campaigns. I said I’m going to run a campaign of integrity. I’m not going to run it like all of the campaigns that I’ve seen before…. And you know, it’s hard to find people that are gonna behave that way in a campaign and be honorable that way in a campaign. But that’s why we need the faithful and we need to take back this country. It’s time that the churches get involved. Pastors, from the pulpit, can invite people to speak, not on politics, but of their faith. But they can discern, they can ask those people running for election, in the pulpit, what is your position on gay marriage? What is your position on abortion? That is totally permissible in 5013C organizations. They simply cannot endorse from the pulpit. And that’s why I’ve gone to churches and I’ve spoken in four churches, five churches a day on Sunday and people line up afterwards because it’s so important that they know. And if we don’t get involved as Christians then how could we possibly take this back?”

“If you’re not electing Christians, then in essence you are going to legislate sin.”

Read the entire interview here.

Obviously, these comments, as well as many others made during this interview, drew harsh criticism from the left.  Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, D-Florida, who is Jewish, told the Orlando Sentinel that she was “disgusted” by the comments.

And dont think Harris left gays out of the mix. No, she had plenty to say about the mo’s. Such as:

Q: Do you support civil rights protection on the basis of sexual preference?

A: “Civil rights have to do with individual rights and I don’t think they have anything to do with the gay issues. I have not supported gay marriage and I do not support any civil rights actions with regard to homosexuality.”

Isn’t she precious??

Apparently the GOP isn’t so sure anymore. They’re tripping over one another trying to get as far away from her fallout as they possibly can…quicker than when they fled Pat Roberston. Apparently even the GOP realizes that pandering at this level can only backfire and they don’t want to be attached to her in any way when the “Kit” hits the fan.

Of course, now Harris is running for a seat in the U.S. Senate, in an effort to unseat a very popular incumbant, Bill Nelson (D). The GOP knows Nelson will retain his seat. State GOP leaders, including Governor Jeb Bush, don’t think she can win against Nelson in November. As proof, her fundraising has dropped, frustrated campaign workers have defected in droves and the campaign issues have been overshadowed by news of her dealings with a corrupt defense contractor who gave her $32,000 in illegal campaign contributions.

It is a foregone conclusion that Katherine Harris will not become a Senator. To believe otherwise would be laughable. She simply can’t win.

That will not, however, stop her shameless pandering. The very fact that she believes she’s going to ‘heaven’ is proof of her insanity.

Sorry Katherine. This time you just can’t steal the election. And God apparently isn’t on your side.

Sunday Funnies – The Perfect Wal-Mart Greeter

Posted by Daniel on August 27, 2006

A very loud, unattractive, mean-acting woman walks into Wal-Mart with her two kids in tow, screaming obscenities at them all the way through the entrance.

The Wal-Mart Greeter says, “Good morning and welcome to Wal-Mart. Nice children you’ve got there – are they twins?”

The ugly woman stops screaming long enough to say, “Hell no they ain’t. The oldest one, he’s 9 and the younger one, she’s 7. Why the hell would you think they’re twins? Do you really think they look alike?”

“No”, replies the greeter, “I just couldn’t believe you got laid twice.”

Thanks, Debbie D.  This  one was really good.

And Me Without My Parasol…

Posted by Daniel on August 26, 2006

Blue Springs is just north of Warrensburg.

Okay, since I had no idea this image would continually update, it’s apparent you can’t see the storms here as they were last night. Suffice it to say this picture showed mostly red, yellow and dark green.

For well over a week (at least) it has been hot and dry. The ground all around the area has been baked and huge cracks had formed everywhere. It’s been all I could do to keep the soil around the house somewhat moist so that the foundation doesn’t shift and crack. Unfortunately it has been next to impossible to fill the demands of the baked ground. All anyone around here was saying was bring on the rain. Myself included.

Everywhere in the area you see wilted (or dead) gardens where they are normally always lush and green. Ours included.

Then, at around ten in the morning yesterday, the rain came. And it’s been here ever since. Massive storms. I have already had to empty my rain gauge once this morning and that makes for about five inches thus far.

Now the rains are here and will be hanging around off-and-on through tomorrow. So much for my outdoor projects.

Be careful what you wish for.

It’s Not What You got…It’s How You Lose It

Posted by Daniel on August 25, 2006

On a daily basis, I keep hearing Republicans spouting off about how ‘safe’ this country is because they have all the power (for now).

“If the Democrat party gains the majority in Washington, this war on terror will spiral out of control.”

“The Democrats are weak on defense and the party of ‘cut and run’.”

Here’s one of my favorites…

“If you elect Democrats in November, the terrorists will bring their war back into America, because Democrats know nothing about securing this nation.”

These are just some of the soundbites I hear on the news, during interviews and speeches, and especially all over the blogosphere. And they are lies…all lies. I don’t want to hear their funky explaination about how this is a proven fact. It isn’t.

There isn’t a single SANE politician out there that would simply allow an attack to occur and who wouldn’t defend this country to the very end. THAT, my friends, is a fact.

The problem these days is that there are just too many politicians – on both sides of the isle – who know how to rally the scary lies to the scary crazy people out there. The folks who truly believe it when a politician tells them God wants their vote, and the Dempcrats don’t believe in God.

Personally, I think one big problem with the Democratic Party is that too many of them DO believe in God (or like Republicans, just say they do for a vote). It’s the worst kind of pandering.

Presently, it looks as if the Democrats may – just may – regain the majority on the House and quite possibly, the Senate. As a Democrat, I really want this to happen, for the “Checks & Balances” part, if nothing else. My only fear is that if the majority does swing in their favor, the Democratic majority will spend the next couple of years doing nothing but trying to topple the idiot in the Whitehouse.

My advice, ignore him and focus your efforts on repairing this country. Leave Bush and his self-imploding administration to hang themselves, because they do a much better job of it on their own. They need no help from you.

As for the Republicans currently in office, as well as those with plans to run for higher office, America is telling you in a very loud voice, “Practice what you preach. You’re going to need to pray to keep your jobs in 73 days.”

The bottom line is that you can sum up the current Republican Party in one word:

The past 5 years have litterally seen the rich get MUCH richer and the poor get tossed aside, especially in the wake of Katrina.

By the way Bush, stop touting the fact that your administration has approved $100 million for Katrina relief. The words don’t mean shit since the money hasn’t reached the state or local areas. Stop insnuating the money is there and the Govenor and Mayor haven’t acted. That is a bald-faced lie. They are still waiting for that money.

This is yet another example of what American’s are no longer buying. It doesn’t matter how you pretty-up the words to suit whatever crowd you’re lying speaking to, people are finally starting to see your words for what they are…

Don’t get me wrong, I think my own party is really fucked up, too. They have their media savvy attack dogs out there (just like the Republicans) testing the political waters to see what key words work best and where. Meanwhile, the actual candidates and those “thinking” of running (yeah, right…piss or get off the pot, Hillary!!) can stand back so as not to dirty themselves on whatever fallout may occur. Senator George Allen should have used this strategy. Macaka. What an idiot!!!

Yeah…yeah…I know. I’m just another one of those loud mouth Bush-hating angry godless liberals. Every word of that is quite true. But let’s break those words down, shall we?

Loud: Marked by intensity.

Mouth: Speak.

Bush: (1)Rough uncleared country. (2)Fucking Idiot.

Hating: To Find distasteful or to loathe.

Angry: Indignant.

Godless: Not acknowledging a diety or devine law.

Liberal: Not narrow in opinion or judgement. (3)Tolerant.

Sources: 1=The New Merriam-Webster Dictionary/3=Wikipedia/2=My Honest Opinion.

Republicans think I’m full of shit. I think they are dillusional lying hypocritical greedy zealots. Who’s right and who’s wrong? Is there even such a thing? At this point it doesn’t seem to matter. This is especially true in politics. One thing is certain, after being led astray with lies for the past five years, the people (you remember them, don’t you Mr. President?) will vote for a change. It’s time for their “mandate”.

Leadership will change hands this November 7th. In effect, it’s really a matter of voting for the lesser of two evils. Based on the past five years, I’ll take the Democrats any day.

Just remember, someone bigger than all of us is watching…

…and she is pissed!!!

Getting Around In The Stag-Nation

Posted by Daniel on August 24, 2006

“A species that can’t adapt and evolve is doomed to extinction.”

I don’t know who said that first, but it rings very true. Especially in the present day.

It is believed that at least one species (fish, mammal, insect, etc.) dies off each and every day. Either due to natural selection or at the hands of man. It is also thought that man is responsible for more species going extinct in his relatively short history than nature since time began.

That could be debated, but I think it’s closer to being true as time passes.

Bearing all of that in mind, one would think that mankind would learn from the above axiom, so as not to be the next extinct species.

All evidence to the contrary.

As the days pass, the human species seems closer to destroying not only itself, but all life on Earth as well.

It seems to be in our nature to find ways and reasons to kill each other. Even after hundres of thousands of years of so-called evolution, we just can’t seem to ‘just get along’.

“You don’t believe in my God, so you must die.

“You have built your home on my land, so you must die.”

“You don’t look like me, so you must die.”

“You don’t love me, so you must die.’

“You look like my mother. I hate my mother, so you must die.”

“I am ‘pro-life’. You are ‘pro-choice’, so you must die.”

“I didn’t know you weren’t a quail. Sorry you got in the way and died.”

So many more reasons we find which end up with someone dying. Rather than learning from the past, we, as a species, are programmed to repeat it. Kill or be killed.

Evolution or Intelligent Design. Call it what you will. Nothing in either term says that we are a species incapable of committing peace.

We, like all other species on this planet, are subject to the whims of nature. Fire, flood, earthquake, plague, asteroid, storms, volcano, etc. Many fall victim to natures wrath in whatever form it takes every single day. We have no control over these events. We rally to the aid of those stricken without hesitation.

This, in itself, shows our capacity to live and love. The human species is capable of such sweet emotion and dreams. Our ability to show imagination and creativity seems, for the most part, to know no bounds…save one.

Each other.

For some reason – possibly through evolution – we have an inate ability to show incongruity between what might be expected and what actually occurs. If the human species had to be summed up in one word, that word would be “irony”.

Love thy neighbor is plastered throughout many different cultures and religions. Yet at the same time, we see neighbors bombing neighbors. What’s worse, those bombs seem to be the preamble. There are other neighbors who want bigger bombs that are capable of not only taking out one neighbor, but all of them.

Leading by example, us. As in the U.S.

Almost fifty years ago, a challenge was made. Landing men on the moon. Within ten years, the U.S. had accomplished just that. At great expense, both financial and human loss, this great challenge was met.

Once again, America had proven it’s ability, imagination and fortitude. Very few on the entire planet were not sitting in front of a television or radio to share the pride and excitement and, in some small way, be a part of history. Human history.

Since that day, no ‘giant steps’ have been taken. For man or mankind. That knowledge and creativity has been turned inward. Rather than going back to the moon, or beyond even that, more terrible weapons have been (and are still being) created.

We are somehow still believing that in order to maintain peace, we have to build up arms with which to blow one another away. After all, it’s hard to think of peace when there are those who want to fly planes into our buildings in order to kill as many of us as possible.

The U.S. has suddenly been forced to take it’s attention off of going where no man has gone before. We now set our sights on those on the horizon rather than new horizons.

With a global population growing at too fast a rate, it seems inevitable that fuel, food and geography will continue to be reason enough for mankind to fight for it’s own survival. What options do we have? Without focusing on finding/exploring other places to live, such as Mars or even the Moon, we are doomed to extinction. In order to maintain humanitarian efforts, we are erasing more of what Earth has that keeps us alive.

The human species does not lack the will to survive. We do, however, lack the drive. Instead of moving forward, we have stopped dead in our tracks like a deer in headlights. And once again, America is setting the pace. We’ve stopped reaching for the stars in order to reach the trigger.

We teach our children to fear that which we don’t (or won’t) understand. In doing so, we are, in esscense, killing our future. The children can see farther and save our species because that is where the last bastion of pure imagination and creativity exists. Are we really willing to teach them hate rather than how to truly grow and move forward? To evolve?

Caution: Gay Construction Ahead – Part 5 – Ta Daaaaaaa!

Posted by Daniel on August 22, 2006

I am so happy to be able to announce the new deck is now officially done. I banged the last nail, drove the last screw and sawed the last plank at 6:15 PM yesterday.

I took plenty of pictures (again, on our cheapo Wal Mart camera) and they WILL be posted on the top tab “Our Big Deck” ASAP.

By that time, Steve came home from work and saw that I was obviously bone tired. But what did he see me doing? Sweating like a French whore on nickle night from all the labor? Nooooooooo…

Yes, I was so proud of what was accomplished that I just couldn’t resist setting the tables, chairs, bistro set and plants so that Steve would see how nice it looks. I haven’t put the fountains or the statues out there yet, but obviously there is still much to decorate.

Before the decorating began, however, there was the matter of the mess to clean up that has accumulated over the last six weeks. Just the sawdust alone could fill up three large Prada bags.

Bear in mind I was flying solo on this project yesterday and, because my magic wand was at the cleaners, had to finish this project with my own little hands.

My hands!!

My perpetually soft and delicate man-hands!!

Just look at them now! They look rougher than Whitney Houston!

The smashed fingers, the cuts from all the new fancy schmancy tools, the fingernails that look like I get a manicure at the local saw mill. And, yes, I see a callus. Eeewww. They look so…straight. It’s going to take a keg of moisturizer to bring these hands back to life.

Oh well, I guess that will have to wait. There’s still so much to get done in the next two weeks. I’ll just have to keep the testosterone flowing if I want to get the current projects finished in time.

I really have to thank Ric and Scott for all of their monumental help on this project. It was such a time-consuming and physically difficult job. They not only threw in an incredible amount of labor, but they taught me so much, especially how to use those tool thingies. You guys were so patient with me. Thanks oodles!! I was serious about having a little bronze plaque with your names made and placed in just the right spot…where everyone sits. 😈

So let’s see where we are now on our project list…

1) Tear down old deck…CHECK

2) Build new larger deck…CHECK

Now we just need to finish the downstairs family room, fix up outside the kitchen bay window (where part of the old deck used to be), clean and paint the concrete patio, finish the brick mosaic patio, paint the front porch wrought iron and storm door…

“Honey, can you write a CHECK…?”

Stay tuned…more to come…

Impeachment – Exercise Your Rights

Posted by Daniel on August 21, 2006

In 1998, the Republican-led Congress overwhelmingly voted to impeach then-President Bill Clinton. The charge was that of committing perjury, obstruction of justice and abuse of power during a grand juy investigation into his affair with Monica Lewinsky.

Before Clinton, only two other presidents had been impeached:

Richard Nixon in 1974 for obstruction of justice, abuse of power and contempt of congress;

Andrew Johnson in 1868.

There just isn’t room here for all of the impeachment charges against Johnson, but you can read all about it at the link above.

Fast-forward to the present day. Again we see a President with an ego run amok. There is, however, a very big difference between those unfortunate prior three and the George W. Bush…This President is acting in conjunction with his Vice-President. Together they have not only broken their oaths of office to uphold the Constitution, they are clearly trying to rewrite the constitution.  What follows is a short list of impeachable acts committed by both Bush and Ceney.

Examples of reasons to impeach both Bush and Cheney are:

Bush intentionally misled Congress and the public regarding the threat from Iraq in order to justify a war against Iraq, in violation of Title 18 United States Code, Section 1001 and intentionally conspired with others to defraud the United States in connection with the war against Iraq in violation of Title 18 United States Code, Section 371.

Bush admitted to ordering the National Security Agency to conduct electronic surveillance of American civilians without seeking warrants from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court of Review, duly constituted by Congress in 1978, in violation of Title 50 United States Code, Section 1805.

Bush conspired to commit the torture of prisoners in violation of the UN Torture Convention and the Geneva Convention, which under Article VI of the Constitution are part of the “supreme Law of the Land”.

Bush acted to strip Americans of their constitutional rights by ordering indefinite detention of citizens, without access to legal counsel, without charge and without opportunity to appear before a civil judicial officer to challenge the detention, based solely on the discretionary designation by the President of a U.S. citizen as an “enemy combatant”, all in subversion of law.

Bush rejected the limits established by the Constitution upon the Executive Branch, said limits reinforced by the Judiciary, through his unprecedented use of “signing statements”, spurning the the Legislative Branch’s exclusive power to make laws by exempting the Executive Branch from such laws.

Cheney encouraged, aided and abetted the actions of George W. Bush, failing his oath of office as Vice President to protect and defend the Constitution. He set up the Office of Special Plans to circulate raw intelligence reports directly to top officials and the media bypassing the normal analytical process; and pressured intelligence analysts to report his desired intelligence perspective.

Cheney also participated in and may have ordered the exposure of the classified identity of Valerie Plame, a CIA operative, in retribution for protected political speech.

The question of impeachment has been repeatedly brought up.  Overwhelmingly by the Democrats.  Lately, though, Republicans are now (in a soft squeaky voice) using the “I” word and some are testing the political waters with it.

Has America grown so complacent over security that they are willing to allow this administration to remove their civil rights and break federal laws in order to do it?  Have we drunk the Kool-Aid?  Are we, as a nation of free-thinkers, allowing this administration tink for us?  Are we so self-involved that we tell Bush and Congress that we trust them with our lives?

Impeachment is an ugly process.  It makes this country look as though we are too stupid to vote for honest representation.  I personally don’t want the world to have to see the circus of 1998 repeated, however this administration has already shown it’s lack of honesty and integrity around the world.

America, it’s time to impeach.  Sadly.  Again.
