Remembering 9/11

Posted by Daniel on September 11, 2006

The following is something that sort of came to me after the shock of that day. I thought I’d post it here as my way to mark the day, five years later.

I don’t now – nor have I ever – claim to be anything resembling a poet. I simply needed to write something, especially during those days. I can only imagine this to be one of thousands of similar writings from that time.

Pieces of a Flag

On a sunny Tuesday morning, it could have been any normal day.

Many of our East coast friends went about beginning in their usual way.

Coffee cup’s filling, friendly “Good morning’s” and the day’s work being prepped,

While in the skies above them the fingers of an unseen evil crept.

We lost a lot of friends that day, both in New York and in D.C.

The shock of what has happened is, even now, still hitting me.

There was one plane of four that by heroism, did not reach its mark.

The courage shown by those passengers is the epitome of freedoms’ spark.

Thousands in the Standing Stripes and as many in the Star,

Would never have fair warning of their fates sealed from afar.

Men who hate our pride and freedom and want to make us pay,

How could we have known, for this, they’d take our friends away?

Four planes, full of innocents, by evil-doers turned into missile’s,

Turned a peaceful morning into the noise of sirens, screams and whistles.

We watched…frozen…awestruck, as they tore into our country’s heart.

This nation, by resolve, will prove cowards cannot pull our flag apart.

We bid goodbye to innocence that day at the hands of those morally depraved.

But what they keep forgetting is WE’RE AMERICA, Home of the Brave!!

We will rebuild…We must move on, and yes, we’ll overcome,

And to those we’ve lost we make this vow…we’ll remember you…every one.

Dedicated to “The Trio”…

Friends I lost in the World Trade Center.

This is a comment Steve “Revel” posted on the Daily Kos and he’s asked me to post it here as a comment.

“(My comment on a DailyKos “Where Were You on 9-11” Diary, which I would like to post on our blog.)

I was awakened by the phone, same as you were, BruinKid.

Having taken the day off from work, after a long weekend with a friend in Lost Wages. He told me the same thing your mother did, turn on any channel, we’re under attack-they have hit the Towers, etc.

Half asleep, I thought he meant they were attacking here (Kansas City)…and I remember the panic I felt for my friends and co-workers (I work in a federal building).

Later on, awake, and glued to the TV (aghast and struggling to come to terms with a freshly and abruptly changed world) I thought of the new guy I was dating, and how he had called me (after one date!) while I was in Vegas, to make sure I wanted to go out again (Well, yes, I would! Thank you!).

We agreed to go out for our second date Sept 11, 2001. I remember thinking it was selfish of me to worry about social plans, but also I thought he had some kind of military connection (Marines) and would we soon be at war? Would there be no chance for any plans?

Last weekend we celebrated the 5th anniversary of that weekend, so my partner and I are forever tied to a moment that changed America’s history. Coupled with the anniversary of my father’s death (Sept 13), this period conjures an indescribable emotional combination.

And I know I am not the only one.”
